Inflammation is often at the root of many chronic conditions. Our immune system and overall health often starts in the gut, which can be compromised when food sensitivities are present, leading to chronic conditions such as:
-IBS, GERD/Heartburn, or Crohn’s Disease
-Asthma, runny nose, or sore throat
-General muscle pain/aching or joint pain/aching, or stiffness
-General fatigue, irritability, depression, anxiety, mood swings
What is a food sensitivity and is a food sensitivity identified?
A food sensitivity is the end result of a reaction of the body to foods and/or food-chemicals which causes inflammation. Foods that cause this reaction in the body are termed reactive foods and they are different for each person. Since reactive foods are unique to the individual food sensitivities are often overlooked as possibility but are generally the reason why many remain ill despite typical treatment. Since the reactive foods can be different for every person, even a generic anti-inflammatory diet may be toxic for some people. Food sensitivities are identified using Mediator Response Testing (MRT). Currently it is the most comprehensive test on the market testing 150 different foods/chemicals.
Could I diagnose food sensitivities without testing?
Perhaps, but it would be a long and difficult process. Many times reactive foods are dose dependent. This means depending on the quantity and frequency consumed you may have little to no reaction or you could have a large scale reaction. This also means that you could have symptoms within an hour or 3 days later making it difficult to identify a pattern.
What is involved with the MRT test?
1. An initial consultation will be set-up with a dietitian to review your history and symptoms and to make sure you are a good fit for testing. Certain medications or medical conditions for instance may produce false readings so an evaluation must be completed prior to testing.
2. After the initial consultation a blood draw will be completed at a nearby lab then shipped to the testing facility
3. Results are usually delivered within 10 days of testing.
4. A follow-up session is scheduled and your dietitian will assist you in implementing your personalized diet protocol.
